Hello and welcome

Hi, thanks for being here!

Writing about my work as a communications consultant is, strangely, a rather novel experience for me.

For many years, I worked out of the studios on the second and third floors of BBC New Broadcasting House in central London. Every day, with the indefatigable World Service and R4 teams, I’d report on extraordinary events, interviewing CEOs, politicians, whilst telling the stories of ordinary people who’d found themselves caught up in the news.

However, one of our sacred truths at the BBC was, quite rightly, “the journalist is not the story.” It was drummed into all of us, repeatedly. Inserting your own experience into your reporting was seen, at least when I first started, as a terrible faux pas!

Indeed, when I moved into government and wrote for a succession of Secretaries of State, it would have been unconscionable to insert my own thoughts into speeches or editorial products.

So, in this blog, I’m looking forward to writing about my work and the incredible organisations I collaborate with. I’ll share some of the lessons I’ve learnt over the years and consider the challenges facing organisations as they try to communicate messages that cut through the constant thrum of noise. But above all, I’ll be sharing my passion for storytelling in all its guises and exploring the power it has to connect us all.
